Legal Experience

I began my career as a criminal defense lawyer. For fifteen years, I worked with Hon. Louis B. Garippo (the judge in the John Wayne Gacy trial) as well as many of the top criminal defense lawyers in Chicago.  I tried many cases, including jury trials, to verdict.  Lou Garippo and I obtained an acquittal for a holiday court bailiff in the “Greylord” investigation into judicial corruption in the Circuit Court of Cook County.  We also represented the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County in a ten-week federal jury trial arising from the public corruption investigation “Operation Incubator.”

Subsequently, I led the litigation department for Sam Zell’s now defunct “captive” law firm, which was affiliated with the parent company of Zell’s private investments, publically traded REITs.

I returned to the private practice of law as a partner in a mid-sized law firm.  Two years after a merger with a large multi-office firm headquartered outside of Chicago, I started my own practice.

I have dealt with a broad array of legal issues.  In addition to trial work, I have represented clients in many arbitrations and mediations.  I am an experienced appellate lawyer having written at least 85 federal and state court appeals. I have significant experience in e-discovery.

In February 2016, I was appointed by the federal court to serve as Compliance Administrator for the Cook County Assessor under the Shakman decree, which prohibits unfair political hiring.

My clients include publicly-traded and mid-market companies and high net worth individuals.  They cross a wide range of regulated industries (including financial, public utilities, health care and gaming) and non-regulated industries (including real estate, hospitality, manufacturing and retail).

I have affiliations with a network of talented lawyers in Chicago and across the country. These lawyers have varying degrees of experience and expertise in a wide range of subject areas.  I call on these lawyers to assist me should the matter require.

Major Federal Court Appointment

In February 2016, I was appointed by the federal court to serve as Compliance Administrator for the Cook County Assessor under the Shakman decree, which prohibits unfair political hiring. My responsibilities include, among other things, training the Assessor, supervisors and employees on unlawful political discrimination; monitoring and reporting on the office’s employment actions; input into an employment plan and the creation and implementation of policies and procedures to prevent unlawful political discrimination in the office; and filing periodic public reports with the Court describing the Assessor’s progress toward substantially complying with the terms of the Court’s supplemental relief order.
